Preparing for a Tornado:

Buy or prepare a tornado emergency kit or tornado survival kit and have with it:

  • A first aid kit

  • All essential medications

  • Special items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members.

  • Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.

Preparing for a tornado:

  • Know the difference between a WATCH and a WARNING:

  • A tornado WATCH means a tornado is possible in your area.

  • A tornado WARNING means that a tornado has been sighted and could be headed for your area

Have a Home Tornado Plan:

  • Select a place where your family could gather if a tornado is headed your way.

  • Your basement could be the safest place.

  • If your home has no basement, choose a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest level.
Keep this area clean and uncluttered.

During a Tornado Warning:

  • Listen to your local radio and TV stations for up-to-date storm and weather information.

  • The tornado may be approaching your area.

  • If you are inside, go to your basement or safe place and stay clear from glass and other objects
that could fly at your during the tornado.

  • If you are outside, hurry to the basement of a nearby sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch or low-
    lying area.

  • If you are driving in your car, get out immediately and go to a safe place.

  • Go to safety immediately.

After the tornado passes:

  • Watch out for fallen power lines and do not go into the damaged area.

  • Get the radio from your 72 hour emergency kit and listen for information and instructions.

  • Get your flashlight and check your home for any damage.
