Having a Fireproof safe

It’s a good idea to invest in a fireproof and watertight safe. During a disaster anything can
happen to your home.  All of your important documents and papers will be kept safe from
harm or getting lost during a fire, flood, or other type of disaster.

Photos:

Make copies of all of your favorite family photos and put them in your safe. If you own a
digital camera and your photos are in digital format, copy them onto CDs and put them in
the safe.

Important Documents:

Important papers such as insurance documents, the deed to your house, passports, and
other important papers need to be put inside the safe.

After a major disaster, without having a safe place for your documents, it becomes difficult
to prove that you are the owner of your house, that you purchased insurance for your
house, and so on.

Planning as a Family:

Let your family know that you are getting a safe, so that they can put in some special items
that they don’t want to get lost during a disaster.

Family meetings are a good time to talk about disaster preparedness and to come up with a
family disaster plan. Involving the family can help reassure your children and help them to
feel safe knowing that their family is prepared.
