Preparing for a Winter Storm:
Buy or prepare a natural disaster emergency kit or 72 hr survival kits and also:
- All essential medications
- Special items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members.
- Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
- An extra supply of blankets
Know the difference between a WATCH and a WARNING:
- A winter storm WATCH means storm conditions are possible in your area.
- A winter storm WARNING means conditions are now occurring or will occur soon.
During a Winter Storm Warning:
- Listen to your local radio and TV stations for up-to-date storm and weather information.
- Stay inside during the storm
- If you need to go outside make sure that you are dressed properly. Remember that wearing
several layers will keep your warmer than just one heavy coat.
- Be careful when walking on icy walkways.
If you are in your car:
- Avoid traveling during a winter storm but if you must, have an Emergency Car Kit in your trunk.
- Make sure to tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to arrive there.
That way if you get stuck along the way, they will be able to know where you are at and call
for help.
If your car gets stuck:
- Never try to walk to safety. Stay inside your car.
- Start the car to use the heater for only 10 minutes every hour. Make sure the exhaust pipe is
clear so that the fumes wont come inside the car.
- Your overhead light will help you be seen and can be used while the car is running.
- Keep one window slightly open to allow air to be let in
After the Winter Storm:
- Get your radio from your 72 hour emergency kit and listen for weather updates and further
instructions.
- Avoid driving your car until conditions get better. Roads could be blocked because of snowfall.
- Avoid overexertion. The leading cause of death during the winter is heart attacks from
shoveling snow.
Winter Storm Preparedness
My friend ordered one of the Deluxe 2-person 72 hour kits and I was VERY impressed. I immediately ordered one for myself and the children's kit for my 2 children. Thanks!
