  • The United States has one of the highest death rates fire in the world.

  • Fire is the second leading cause of accidental death in the home.

  • There are more than 2 million residential fires in the United States every year, resulting in 6,000
    deaths.

Making your home safer:

Buy or prepare or family survival kit and have with it:

  • A first aid kit

  • All essential medications

  • Put your 72 hour kit in a place where it can be quickly and easily accessed.

Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers:

  • Smoke detectors are an essential part of fire prevention because they will alert you to a fire.

  • Make sure that you install a smoke detector inside each bedroom, in the kitchen and on all levels
    of your home.

  • Test your smoke detectors once a month and make sure to replace the batteries at least once a
    year.

  • It is recommended that you have a fire extinguisher handy in your kitchen because many fires
    start in the kitchen.

Escaping the Fire safely:

  • Plan at least two different escape routes from every room of your home.

  • Have a meeting location selected outside your home where your family can go after escaping the
    fire.

  • If there is smoke blocking your first escape route, use your second way out.

  • If you must exit through smoke, get down low and crawl underneath the smoke to escape.

  • If you need to escape out through a closed door, touch the door with the back of your hand
before opening it. If the door feels hot to the touch, try your second way out.
