Emergency Preparation - Children
Emergencies and disasters can often be a scary topic of discussion for younger children. When a
child hears about a natural disaster or sees something on the news, they are often filled with
troubling thoughts. It’s important to always communicate and discuss emergency preparedness with
your children.
Talk to your children about what they should do if a disaster were to strike. If you are discussing
earthquakes, you could talk about running and finding cover under a table or chair.
Pick a meeting spot outside of your home, where your kids know to meet if they get separated from
the family. Reassure them that your family is prepared for a disaster and that everything will be okay.
Involve your children in helping you make your 72 hour emergency kits. Let them choose on of there
toys or blankets to put in the kit, to add some comfort items to their kit.
However you choose to involve your children, the bottom line is the more they help prepare the more
they will feel safe and secure.
