In a world where disasters are becoming increasingly numerous, many people are now thinking more seriously
about emergency and disaster preparedness. It’s often really easy to get caught thinking “it will never happen to
me”, but no matter where you live, it is important for your family to be prepared with all of the right emergency kits
and emergency supplies.
There are a few steps to take when preparing for a disaster or any emergency
Make a Family Emergency Plan
Sit down with your family and discuss what to do when a natural disaster occurs. Pick a meeting spot somewhere
outside where everyone can gather once the disaster has passed. If you already have emergency kits, make sure
that everyone knows where to find them. When talking to little children about emergency preparedness discuss
their concerns with them and reassure them that everything will be alright. Let them know that your family is
prepared with disaster kits in case something was to happen.
First Aid
Have a family meeting and discuss some of the basic first aid practices, such as what to do when someone is
choking, CPR, and how to call 911 in an emergency. Let your family know where the emergency first aid kit is
located.
Important Documents
It is recommended that you have all of your important documents by your emergency kits or put them in a fire and
water proof safe.
Important documents include:
Social Security Cards
Insurance Papers
Deeds, Bonds, Stocks
Copies of Favorite Family Photos
